Why is the game Donkey Kong called "Donkey" when the main character is an ape or a monkey?

I don't get where the "Donkey" comes from. If anything, shouldn't the game be called "Monkey Kong"?

Who cares. It's just a name. If it is Monkey Kong it would be just too simple.
